Chicago Board of Education Approves $2 Million Settlement in Sexual Assault Case

In a significant action, the Chicago Board of Education recently reached a unanimous decision to approve a $2 million settlement with a former student who suffered from grooming and sexual assault perpetrated by a security guard at Paul L. Dunbar Career Academy, located in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

The guard in question, Tywain Carter, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty in May 2023 to the crime of criminal sexual assault of a minor while being in a position of authority over the victim.

Legal documents reveal that the victim, referred to as John Doe in the lawsuit, was only 15 years old and in his sophomore year when the inappropriate actions began in late 2021. Reports indicate that Carter routinely removed the boy from class, during which time he would assault him in various locations throughout the school grounds.
