Troy Edwards Jr., son-in-law of James Comey, unexpectedly resigned from his role as a federal prosecutor on Thursday—mere moments after news broke that the former FBI director was indicted by a federal grand jury.

Edwards, who held the position of senior national security prosecutor within the Eastern District of Virginia—the same office now prosecuting Comey—submitted his resignation immediately.

In a brief letter addressed to the newly appointed US Attorney Lindsey Halligan, Edwards stated that he was resigning “to uphold my oath to the Constitution and the country.”

The indictment, which accuses Comey of providing false testimony to Congress during his September 30, 2020, statements related to the Trump-Russia inquiry, has generated significant media attention.

Comey, who was the FBI director from 2013 until Trump dismissed him in 2017, claims his innocence but is anticipated to surrender on Friday.

If found guilty, Comey faces severe penalties, including up to five years in prison for charges of making false statements and obstruction of justice.

Former President Trump has long branded the investigation into Russian interference as a “hoax” and “witch hunt,” recently celebrating Comey’s indictment and asserting that the “dishonest” ex-FBI chief must face “a very big price.”

“Regardless of your feelings toward corrupt James Comey, and I suspect not many have positive ones, HE LIED! It’s a straightforward but critical lie,” Trump expressed in a recent post on Truth Social.

“There is no way he can justify his actions. He has always been a dirty cop, now under a crooked judge appointed by Joe Biden; it looks like he’s off to an excellent start,” Trump added.

In the meantime, FBI Director Kash Patel took to social media on Friday to refute allegations claiming the DOJ only targeted Comey due to Trump’s antipathy towards him.

“The investigation into Comey, led by dedicated career FBI agents, intel analysts, and staff, was thorough and above board. They will continue to uphold integrity,” Patel stated via X.

“These grossly misleading accusations regarding this FBI’s alleged politicization stem from the very media that championed the Russia Gate narrative—it’s blatant hypocrisy. Their unfounded claims affirm our commitment to pursue our mission until its conclusion,” he further asserted.

“Irrespective of one’s view on corrupt James Comey, I believe few hold a favorable opinion of him, HE LIED! It is a straightforward lie but crucial,” Trump remarked in a Truth Social post.

James Comey stated that his “heart is shattered” concerning the Justice Department following the indictment.

The news of Edwards resigning follows the earlier dismissal of Comey’s daughter, Maureen Comey, from her prosecutor position in Manhattan back in July.

She has since launched a lawsuit alleging her termination was “solely or significantly due to her relationship with former FBI Director James B. Comey.”
