Mike Johnson Seems To Be Have Some Sort Of Breakdown Over The Shutdown He Is Causing

In an apparent strategy to navigate the ongoing government shutdown, Republicans are leaning heavily on misrepresentations regarding Democrats’ positions in hopes of garnering support for their funding proposals. These fabrications are so wildly out of touch that one might wonder about the credibility of those pushing them.

Recently, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson appeared on CNBC, where he was quizzed about Democrats’ intentions in a recent meeting. One can only wonder at the tenuous nature of his response when asked if Democrats sought healthcare provisions for undocumented immigrants.

In a curious twist of logic, Speaker Johnson promptly replied with a statement that appears rather detached from the truth:

Absolutely. They documented these demands in writing, as they filed a counter-proposal continuing resolution. Our side presented a straightforward 24-page clean CR, but they countered with what could be described as a “dirty” CR that boasted various demands—including taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants.

That’s not happening. We eliminated that from our comprehensive legislation. Our voters made it clear last fall that they do not wish for American taxpayer dollars to fund those who enter the country illegally. That demand is now apparently a prerequisite for their votes.

Watch Johnson’s full remark here:

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries later took to CNBC to counter Johnson’s assertions, firmly stating, “This is an outright fabrication. Federal law explicitly prohibits taxpayer dollars from being used for the healthcare of undocumented individuals, and there is nothing within our proposals aimed at altering this law. Our focus remains on healthcare for the American populace.”

Watch Jeffries’ response here:

It seems that Speaker Johnson may be experiencing a reality disconnect, as his claims suggest a belief that previous legislation provided healthcare access to illegal immigrants—something that has never been the case.

As Rep. Jeffries pointed out, federal law indeed prohibits non-citizens from benefiting from subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, a federally governed program.

It’s evident that Republicans are engaging in blatant untruths, which could soon become apparent as American families receive notifications of rising health insurance premiums.
