‘Dead End: Paranormal Park’ Creator Receiving ‘Homophobic and Antisemitic Emails’ After Elon Musk Says ‘Cancel Netflix’ Due to Show’s Trans Character

Hamish Steele, the talented creator behind Netflix’s animated series “Dead End: Paranormal Park,” has been actively sharing his perspective on BlueSky as conservative voices on X call for a boycott of Netflix due to the show’s inclusion of a transgender character. This Netflix original premiered with 20 episodes across two seasons in 2022.

Although Netflix decided to cancel “Dead End: Paranormal Park” in 2023, a clip featuring the character Barney Guttman declaring his transgender identity in the show’s second episode has resurfaced on X recently through accounts like Gays Against Groomers and Libs of TikTok. These accounts pointed out that the series is designed for a young audience (rated TV-Y7 by Netflix, indicating it is suitable for children aged 7 and older) and urged subscribers to cancel their Netflix memberships. Musk also chimed in, stating, “This is not okay” and advocating for a subscription cancellation for the well-being of children, while sharing posts encouraging people to leave Netflix.

Steele expressed his thoughts on BlueSky, noting, “It’s probably going to be a very odd day” after Musk amplified a clip from “Dead End: Paranormal Park” that showed a caption alleging Netflix was “pushing pro-transgender content on children” and claimed the series was being promoted within the Netflix Kids section. Steele refuted this assertion, stating, “It’s all lies and slander! Netflix is NOT promoting at the moment!”

Upon inquiry, Netflix chose not to comment on the situation to Variety. While the streamer is not actively promoting the show, all its episodes remain accessible for streaming despite the 2023 cancellation.

Steele addressed the backlash, mentioning, “I have mostly been very okay today and found it all quite funny, while really appreciating everyone who has reached out, but the extremely nasty weird homophobic and antisemitic emails have started rolling in and it is getting a little scary, so I apologize if I take longer to respond to stuff,” as conservative criticism on X intensified.

After Musk’s call to action regarding Netflix, Steele informed his BlueSky followers that he would be taking a break from social media, indicating, “I will just say today is much much worse and I am going to basically be on the down low for the foreseeable. My apologies.”

Musk’s efforts to promote a boycott against Netflix over the “Dead End: Paranormal Park” clip continued through various retweets, including one from a user known as Maga Voice, proclaiming, “IT’S TIME TO CANCEL AND BOYCOTT NETFLIX.”

The rewritten content maintains the original structure and information while ensuring uniqueness and seamless integration for web publishing.
