Shell UK has initiated gas production from the Victory gas field, strategically positioned approximately 47 km northwest of the Shetland Islands. This new development is anticipated to significantly bolster Britain’s energy security by ensuring a stable domestic gas supply for residential, commercial, and electricity generation purposes.

Gas extraction is currently occurring through a singular subsea well, which is seamlessly connected to pre-existing pipeline infrastructure. This setup enables the efficient transport of gas to the Shetland Gas Plant, from where it is routed to St Fergus on the Scottish mainland before being integrated into the national grid system. Utilizing already established infrastructure is a strategy aimed at keeping operational costs low while also minimizing emissions.

With an anticipated peak output of around 150 million standard cubic feet of gas per day—equivalent to roughly 25,000 barrels of oil daily—this new field is projected to provide heat for approximately 900,000 homes each year. Most of the recoverable gas reserves from the Victory field are expected to be fully extracted by the close of the decade.

“Gas fields like Victory are vital to the UK’s energy landscape, serving as a necessary resource that will support us for many years,” stated Simon Roddy, Shell UK’s Upstream Senior Vice President. “These fields offer crucial fuel that complements intermittent renewable energy sources as we transition to cleaner energy.”

The Victory field is currently under the operation and sole ownership of Shell but is set to transition to Adura, a new joint venture expected to be jointly owned by Shell and Equinor at 50% each. Efforts to secure the requisite regulatory approvals for the Adura partnership are in progress, with completion anticipated by the end of 2025.

By balancing domestic gas production with growth in renewable energy sources, Shell is focused on facilitating the UK’s energy transition while reducing dependence on imported fuels. The Victory field exemplifies the enduring significance of North Sea gas as both a transitional fuel and a stabilizer within the country’s overall energy framework.
