Three Men Carjack Pot Dealer in Logan Square Over Lack of Funds for Purchase

CHICAGO — Three men have been accused of carjacking a pot dealer in Logan Square after failing to come up with enough money to buy marijuana, according to officials. Prosecutors sought to have all three men detained on charges related to the incident, but Judge Shauna Boliker opted to place them on electronic monitoring instead.

In court documents, it was revealed that Anthony Jones, 21, Trinity Peterson, 22, and Richard Tolbert, 20, had arranged to purchase marijuana from a dealer on September 20. When the dealer arrived, the trio approached the passenger side of his 2021 Audi Q5.

However, Jones reportedly did not have sufficient funds to complete the transaction. As a result, he allegedly requested the dealer to give them a ride to a gas station to acquire cash.

Once inside the SUV’s back seat, the situation escalated when one of the men allegedly brandished a gun and forced the 33-year-old dealer and his 32-year-old female companion out of the vehicle in the 1600 block of North Kedzie. Prosecutors stated that all three men made threats of harm during the carjacking.

The Chicago Police Department’s carjacking task force located the stolen car parked in the 3200 block of West Bloomingdale and conducted surveillance on the vehicle. Subsequently, officers observed Jones, Peterson, and Tolbert entering the hijacked car and driving away.

The task force officers intervened, stopping the car and apprehending the trio. Each individual is facing a charge of aggravated vehicular hijacking.

Peterson and Tolbert were already on pretrial release at the time, having pending charges from an incident in March. Peterson had allegedly evaded police during a traffic stop until crashing into a curb and utility pole. On the other hand, Tolbert was reportedly seen moving a handgun from his waistband to the seat following the car stop.

Peterson was charged with misdemeanor fleeing and eluding, while Tolbert was charged with felony gun possession, as per court records.
