Dokoupil: “So, senator, some Republicans contend that what you’re really advocating for is taxpayer support for what they characterize as illegal immigrants. I’m aware that’s an oversimplification, but there’s a provision —”

Warren: “Oh, not just an oversimplification.”

Dokoupil: “It’s not accurately true, but —”

Warren: “It’s an outright lie. A flat-out lie.”

Dokoupil: “— the framing of this —”

Warren: “There’s no provision in Medicaid or Medicare allowing undocumented immigrants to receive any form of assistance. None.”

Dokoupil: “— if you would allow me to complete my thought —”

Warren: “Of course. I apologize.”

Dokoupil: “— in the Democratic counterproposal for funding, there’s a restoration of Medicaid benefits for specific noncitizens that were stripped away in the so-called Big, Beautiful Bill, as the Republicans styled it.”

Warren: “No!”

Dokoupil: “Republicans argue that those individuals shouldn’t be accessing health care funded by taxpayers. I’m not delving into the merits — politically, inserting that provision exposes you to this very talking point, this fabrication, as you’ve described it. What’s the rationale for including it? Is it worth the backlash?”

Warren: “No. What’s important is that when hospitals provide care, what matters is the level of reimbursement. The Republicans are suggesting a lower rate, while the Democrats aim to restore it to previous levels to prevent rural hospitals from going bankrupt. No changes in the number of undocumented immigrants receiving emergency care will occur under either party’s plan. The difference lies in whether hospitals, bound by laws from Ronald Reagan’s era, will be compensated adequately for treating patients who arrive in critical conditions, or risk becoming financially unsustainable.”

Warren: “The question is about support for individuals at risk of being evicted from nursing facilities or those dependent on home health services.”
