When California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the FAST Recovery Act, he painted a picture of economic prosperity and worker empowerment. Fast forward two years, and the reality is starkly different: the law’s primary achievement appears to be job losses.

As reported by The Washington Examiner, the Employment Policies Institute disclosed that California has shed nearly 20,000 fast-food jobs since the enactment of this legislation. This staggering figure accounts for a quarter of all fast-food job losses across the nation.

This scenario exemplifies the dangerous intersection of political aspiration and economic oversight. While attempting to signal virtue, policymakers often overlook the practical repercussions of their decisions.

For instance, Pizza Hut franchises terminated 1,200 delivery drivers as cost-cutting measures in response to the new wage regulations. Other businesses, such as Mod Pizza and Foster’s Freeze, have shuttered their locations entirely.

Far from safeguarding employment, Newsom’s mandate has led to a workforce being priced out of their jobs.

Rebekah Paxton from EPI summarized the fallout succinctly, noting, “Newsom’s $20 wage has become little more than an ego boost for him, incurred at the expense of fast-food workers.” Initially celebrated for its purported benefits, the law now stands as a monument to economic misapprehension, with each lost job inflicting hardship on families across the state.

Even those who escaped layoffs face grim prospects; EPI reported that restaurant workers have lost around 250 hours of work annually, which translates to a loss of $4,000 at previous wage levels. Herein lies a cruel paradox: while Newsom promised “living wages,” many workers are finding themselves with diminished hours and reduced income.

Furthermore, the American Cornerstone Institute cautioned that smaller businesses are disproportionately affected by this law. Unlike corporate juggernauts, smaller enterprises lack the financial cushion to absorb escalated labor costs, leading to closures and heightened market consolidation.

According to ACI, “Small businesses cannot withstand the increased burden of labor costs to the same degree as their larger competitors, resulting in further concentration of capital in few hands. Enforcing a uniform minimum wage across California’s diverse economic landscape fails to consider significant regional disparities.”

For example, the cost of living in affluent areas like San Francisco starkly contrasts with rural regions where affordability prevails. Imposing identical wage standards across such varied locales distorts local economies and inhibits business sustainability.

The motivations behind the law appear less about genuine worker welfare and more aligned with centralized governance, media appearances, and Newsom’s personal ambitions.

Despite warnings from conservative voices about the impending fallout, the reality is now all too clear. Unfortunately, a retrospective “we told you so” in response to this failed experiment won’t restore the jobs lost to it.
