Louis C.K. has publicly justified his choice to participate in the Riyadh Comedy Festival in Saudi Arabia.

In his recent guest appearance on “Real Time With Bill Maher,” C.K. remarked that the reaction from the Riyadh audience left many fellow comedians “really surprised.” He emphasized that being involved in a nascent comedy scene, particularly in a region where performances are often subject to significant censorship, presents a “positive opportunity.”

C.K. noted, “There was a performer who identified as both Jewish and a lesbian, and she received a standing ovation. There’s unexpected progress happening here. Comedians have been touring in Arab countries for a long time. Recently, a film festival took place there; it seems to be evolving. Historically, I’ve declined offers from Arab nations.”

He continued, “When this opportunity arose, they mentioned only two limitations: their religion and their government. I don’t have material that touches on those topics. In the past, I would turn down such invitations because of extensive restrictions. However, learning about the changes made me curious. It appears to be a great chance, and I believe comedy can pave the way for dialogue.”

The Riyadh Comedy Festival has attracted considerable backlash from U.S. comedians who challenge the ethics of performing in Saudi Arabia. David Cross issued a harsh critique on his website, specifically admonishing C.K. for participating in the event.

Cross exclaimed, “It’s clear you don’t care about our opinions, but how can we ever take you seriously again? Your complaints about ‘cancel culture’ and ‘freedom of speech’ mean nothing now. We all know the terms of your contract by now.”

Fellow comedian Bill Burr also stood by his choice to perform at the Riyadh festival, describing it as “one of the most gratifying experiences of my career.”

Burr reflected on his journey during the Sept. 29 episode of his “Monday Morning Podcast,” saying, “It was amazing to connect with that region and be involved in their inaugural comedy festival. The royal family appreciated the show, and the entire audience seemed delighted. The organizers expressed their enthusiasm as well.”
