Late Saturday evening, South Carolina State University went into lockdown following reports of gunfire near a student residence on campus, as announced by the Orangeburg institution.

The historically black institution sent out a notification around 11 p.m., which canceled a planned homecoming concert and instructed all students to return to their dormitories after shots were reported at Hugine Suites, according to the university’s website.

“The South Carolina State University campus is under lockdown due to a shooting incident,” the alert stated.

The alert continued: “Due to the situation, the Homecoming concert has been canceled. If you are not a student, we ask that you stay off campus. Residents of Hugine Suites who are not currently in the building should report to SHM. Those in Hugine Suites should remain where they are, and all students in other residence halls should return to their rooms.”

Students living off-campus were also directed to evacuate the vicinity without delay.

University law enforcement has requested assistance from the State Law Enforcement Division for an investigation into the incident.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries.

“My thoughts are with everyone at South Carolina State University tonight,” South Carolina GOP Rep. Nancy Mace wrote on X.

“Remain vigilant and heed the directives of law enforcement as they respond to reports of the shooting on campus. Our thoughts are with the students, faculty, and families impacted by this event,” the alert concluded.

Senator Tim Scott stated that his office is actively monitoring the situation and is praying for everyone’s safety.
