Pope Leo XIV has been subtly critiquing the Trump administration’s controversial stance on illegal immigration. During a gathering of thousands at St. Peter’s Square this past Sunday, he emphasized that migrants ought to be met with compassion rather than “the coldness of indifference or the stigma of discrimination.” In a world divided by borders, Leo’s call for open arms echoes a sentiment that transcends nationality.
Without providing a clear distinction between legal and illegal migration, the Pope urged Catholics to embrace migrants as “brothers and sisters,” advocating for a church that offers consolation and hope. He articulated, “The presence of many brothers and sisters from the world’s South should be welcomed as an opportunity…through an exchange that renews the face of the Church,” as reported by Reuters.
These comments come in the wake of his remarks that challenged the notion of pro-life advocacy juxtaposed with harsh immigrant policies. He pointedly questioned, “Someone who asserts being against abortion but supports the death penalty is not genuinely pro-life,” and provocatively added, “If one claims to oppose abortion yet endorses the inhumane treatment of immigrants in the U.S., I find it difficult to consider that pro-life.” The clear implication suggests that the sanctity of life should also extend to how we treat immigrants.
This did not sit well with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who firmly denied any allegations of inhumane treatment under the current administration’s policies. “In contrast, we witnessed significant abuses under the previous administration,” she contended, denouncing the tragic mishaps that unfolded at the southern border.

Since his election in May following the passing of his predecessor Pope Francis, Leo XIV has emerged as a fervent advocate for liberal principles, voicing support for contemporary issues including climate change awareness. Just recently, he conducted a ritual blessing of a block of ice as a gesture towards climate activism, chastising Trump and the GOP for dismissing global warming discussions.
