A disturbed individual who confronted a police officer with a shovel outside an elementary school in Anaheim, California, was shot dead after he repeatedly attempted to strike the officer despite warnings, new bodycam footage reveals.
The incident began when an officer responded to a 911 alert about a suspicious man, suspected to be under the influence, armed with a brick and a shovel around 12:45 p.m. on September 15.
Upon noticing the police vehicle across the street, 36-year-old Rudy Anthony Martinez II charged at the officer while brandishing the shovel.
The dashcam video captures the moment the officer, whose name has not been released, reacts with an exclamation of âoh sâtâ upon seeing Martinez.
Before the officer could fully exit his cruiser, Martinez began swinging the shovel wildly.
The officer urged Martinez to cease his actions by commanding him to âsit downâ and warning, âyouâre gonna get shot,â while Martinez advanced, brandishing the weapon.
<pDespite two warning shots fired by the officer, Martinez continued his aggressive approach.
This led the Anaheim officer to discharge his firearm.
The Anaheim Police Department stated in a press announcement, âWhen the officer arrived and encountered the subject, an officer-involved shooting occurred.â
The shooting took place close to the parking area of John Marshall Elementary School, which went into lockdown; however, police confirmed that no students were witnesses to the incident.
After the shooting, the officer provided first aid to Martinez until paramedics arrived, as reported by the police.
Martinez succumbed to his injuries approximately 30 minutes after being admitted to the hospital.
