A man was assaulted and rendered unconscious after confronting a group of teenagers who had taken a wheel from his bicycle along the Bloomingdale Trail in Bucktown on Tuesday night, according to a report from Chicago police.

At approximately 9 p.m., officers responded to the scene after receiving a call about a person who had been stabbed near the 1800 block of North Wood Street. Upon arrival, they found a 33-year-old man suffering from a stab wound in the abdomen.

According to police reports, the victim stated that he observed a group of six or seven male teenagers of Hispanic descent, dressed in hoodies and carrying backpacks, one of whom had stolen a wheel from his bicycle.

He approached the group to confront the thief, leading to a confrontation with several individuals. The victim reported that one person from the group stabbed him in the abdomen and choked him until he lost consciousness, after which the group fled westbound along the trail.

Investigators have indicated that surveillance footage appears to show a teenager in a gray hoodie and dark pants removing an item from a fanny pack, stabbing the victim, and then putting the item back before escaping.

The injured man was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and reported to be in serious condition.
