Several Democratic officials criticized Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) for posting a blatantly anti-Muslim message on social media on Thursday.

In a message on X, Tuberville shared a post from the @EndWokeness account that juxtaposed images of the 9/11 attacks and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a Ramadan iftar. The post implied that Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim mayor, was “the enemy.”

“The enemy is inside the gates,” Tuberville captioned the post, echoing similar sentiments he expressed in the past.

Tuberville received swift backlash for his derogatory remarks, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) condemning his Islamophobia and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) calling for the post’s deletion.

Responding to the criticism, Mamdani emphasized the need for politicians to focus on critical policy issues rather than targeting him for his iftar gatherings.

Despite the backlash, Tuberville refused to apologize for his statement, asserting that calling out radical Islam does not equate to being Islamophobic.

Republican lawmakers’ recent anti-Muslim rhetoric, including Tuberville’s post, has raised concerns about the party’s tolerance of such remarks.

A.Britton O’Shields, a staff attorney for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, criticized Tuberville for his divisive social media posts, likening him to former Alabama Governor George Wallace.
