Former President Donald Trump and Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb outside the White House, emphasizing U.S.-Finland diplomatic ties.

This afternoon, President Trump is welcoming Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb to the White House for a crucial bilateral meeting, with a key agenda item focused on solidifying an agreement for the U.S. Coast Guard to acquire a fleet of icebreaker ships.

The planned vessels are intended to navigate the ice-laden waters of the Arctic, serving as a strategic measure against the encroachment of both Russia and China in this geopolitically sensitive area, according to reports from Fox News.

Finland is expected to sell the U.S. four icebreakers, while an additional seven will be constructed in shipyards located in Texas and Louisiana.

Ahead of the meeting, Stubb expressed his anticipation on social media platform X, stating, “I will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on icebreaker cooperation jointly with POTUS.” He expressed pride in Finland’s recognized expertise in Arctic navigation, noting, “The cooperation benefits both countries—Finland and the United States.”

He further remarked, “The deal would not have been possible without President Trump,” underlining the personal and political stakes involved in this international partnership.

The U.S. administration has engaged directly with companies. I’m proud that Finnish arctic expertise is appreciated and trusted. The cooperation benefits both countries, Finland and the United States.

Prior to his discussion with Trump, Stubb also engaged with several U.S. Senators, reinforcing Finland’s commitment to Arctic security.

Expanding on the significance of this agreement, Reuters highlights that Trump has been advocating for the United States to enhance its Arctic capabilities by acquiring up to 40 new icebreakers, a move deemed essential to safeguard U.S. national security amid rising competition from China and Russia.

A White House spokesperson previously indicated that Trump is poised to finalize a memorandum of understanding with Finland to construct four “Arctic security cutters” in Finnish shipyards, describing the initiative as a critical national security requirement.

“We will then leverage Finnish expertise to construct up to seven new ASCs in shipyards located in the United States,” the spokesperson elaborated.

The total expenditure for the 11 new Arctic security cutters, which will serve as medium icebreakers for the U.S. Coast Guard, is projected to be approximately $6.1 billion.

The meeting between President Trump and Stubb is set to commence at 3:15 PM ET, and viewers can watch the proceedings live below:
