Legislation Tackles Forced Marriages as an Additional Focus.
In a bold move, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has tabled a controversial bill in Parliament aimed at what her government describes as ‘Islamic separatism.’ The measures outlined include a sweeping prohibition of the burka and niqab in public venues.
“The ruling Brothers of Italy party proposed fines ranging from £260 to £2,600 for individuals caught wearing these face-covering garments in schools, universities, shops, and public offices.”
“Their assertion is that this bill targets ‘Islamic separatism’ in an effort to fight ‘religious radicalization and hatred motivated by religion.’”
Furthermore, the bill seeks to criminalize virginity testing and strengthens penalties for forced marriages, explicitly including religious coercion as grounds for prosecution.

Additionally, the legislation delineates transparency protocols concerning the funding of mosques and religious organizations. It mandates that Muslim entities disclose their funding sources, limiting financial support to organizations that do not threaten state security.
“Under Meloni’s right-wing coalition government, which enjoys a significant parliamentary majority, this bill, proposed on a recent Wednesday, stands a good chance of passing—though no specific timeline has been announced.”
“The burka, known for its full-body coverage, and the niqab, which only covers the face but leaves the eyes visible, are at the heart of this new legislation.”
