Presidential Message on Down Syndrome Awareness Month

From the founding era of our Nation, America has embraced the profound truth that every child is created in the sacred image of God, endowed with inherent dignity and worth. This Down Syndrome Awareness Month, we reaffirm our dedication to this timeless truth. We honor the remarkable individuals living with Down Syndrome who infuse our lives with joy, inspiration, and purpose—and we express our sincerest appreciation to the families and caregivers who lovingly face the unique challenges and rewards of raising children with developmental disabilities.

Annually, approximately 5,000 infants—about 1 in every 775 births—are diagnosed with Down Syndrome in the United States. This genetic condition can change the trajectory of a child’s development and lead to cognitive challenges, creating uncertainty for their families. Fortunately, progress in research, screening, care strategies, therapeutic interventions, and medical treatments has significantly improved the quality of life and longevity for individuals with Down Syndrome. Today, there are more avenues than ever for independence, meaningful employment, and inclusion in educational settings and communities, allowing individuals with Down Syndrome to participate fully in the fabric of American life.

My Administration remains steadfast in celebrating the sanctity and beauty inherent in every human being. This month, I reiterate my pledge to safeguard the health and well-being of all individuals with Down Syndrome, and we renew our commitment to fostering a culture, a government, and a Nation that honors the dignity of all life and respects the divine essence that resides within each human soul.
