Pumpkins are a popular fall decoration that can also attract unwanted wildlife, such as squirrels. These furry critters are drawn to pumpkins because of their soft, edible interiors and seeds. Squirrels find pumpkins irresistible due to the essential fats, nutrients, and hydration they provide. If you suspect squirrels are snacking on your pumpkins, look for scratches on the surface or hollowed-out sections as telltale signs of their presence.

To deter squirrels and protect your pumpkins, there are several methods you can use. One effective way is to cover your pumpkins with wire mesh or cages, although this may not be the most visually appealing option. Offering alternative food sources like corn or seeds can divert squirrels’ attention, but it may attract more squirrels to your yard. Using commercial or homemade repellents is a cost-effective and efficient method to deter squirrels from your pumpkins.

If you prefer a DIY approach, you can try using petroleum jelly as a squirrel deterrent. Applying a generous layer of petroleum jelly on your pumpkins makes the surface sticky and unappealing to squirrels. Another option is to create a squirrel deterrent spray using hot peppers, which contain capsaicin, a chemical that irritates squirrels and makes objects less appealing to chew on. Additionally, coating your pumpkins with clear spray paint creates a slippery surface that makes it difficult for squirrels to grip and bite through.

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the effectiveness of these deterrent methods. Inspect your pumpkins frequently for any signs of damage or wear to the protective layer, and reapply the deterrent as needed. By taking these precautions, you can enjoy your seasonal decorations without worrying about squirrels ruining them.

In the end, if all else fails or if the effort seems too much, remember that at least the squirrels got a tasty treat from your pumpkins.
