WASHINGTON — President Trump has hinted that California Senator Adam Schiff might be the next political figure to face criminal prosecution, following the recent indictments of former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Leticia James.
He called for the “necessary authorities” to examine his first impeachment, which was spearheaded by Schiff, who served as a representative from California. Trump has labeled the impeachment as a “hoax,” stemming from accusations that he pressured Ukraine into investigating the Biden family.
On Truth Social on Sunday, Trump asserted, “The Ukraine Impeachment (of me!) Scam was a far bigger Illegal Hoax than Watergate.” He expressed hope that the “necessary authorities, including CONGRESS, are looking into this! Adam ‘Schiffty’ Schiff was incredibly dishonest and corrupt.
“Numerous laws and protocols were breached and plainly violated!!!”
In early 2020, Trump was impeached on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, but he was acquitted by the Senate shortly thereafter.
As a key figure in the 2020 impeachment process, Schiff had significant involvement. Trump would later face a second impeachment just before his term concluded, related to the events of January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol.
The initial impeachment focused on Trump’s alleged withholding of $391 million in security assistance to Ukraine, in an attempt to compel Kyiv to aid Rudy Giuliani’s inquiry into the Biden family.
Recently, Trump expressed his frustration to Bondi about the slow pace of investigations by the Department of Justice regarding Comey, James, and Schiff, all of whom deny any wrongdoing.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump lamented, “Nothing is being done. What about Comey, Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff, Leticia???”
This public outcry aimed to communicate privately with Bondi, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Of the three, Schiff remains the only individual yet to be indicted, while Comey was charged on September 25 with lying to Congress and obstruction of justice.
Meanwhile, it is anticipated that former National Security Advisor John Bolton could face charges as early as next week, according to NBC.
Schiff has been under federal investigation for an extended period.
In August, Attorney General Pam Bondi assigned Ed Martin as Special Attorney to oversee the DOJ’s inquiry into Schiff relating to possible mortgage fraud, bank fraud, and wire fraud.
The claims against the California Democrat involve certifying a property in Maryland as his primary home while also designating his condominium in California as his main residence for tax and mortgage purposes.
The allegations date from federally backed loans between 2003 and 2019, asserting that Schiff gained tax advantages and reduced interest rates as a result.
In April, Bill Pulte from the Federal Housing Finance Agency made a referral against Schiff.
The Post reached out to Schiff’s office for further comments.
Previously, Schiff acted as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and promoted unverified allegations regarding Trump’s connections to Russia, which led to his subsequent censure.
The mortgage fraud allegations against Schiff first came to light in 2023 and were reported by CNN.
