Diane Keaton‘s longtime friend and collaborator expressed her thoughts on their last meeting, noting Keaton’s significant weight loss in the lead-up to her passing.
In a conversation with PEOPLE, Carol Bayer Sager recounted seeing the Oscar-winning actress just a few weeks before her death and was taken aback by the changes in her figure. “She was quite thin,” Sager recalled. “She had lost an alarming amount of weight.”
Sager explained that Keaton had primarily resided in Palm Springs throughout much of the year due to wildfires affecting her California home, which resulted in less frequent visits between the two. “When she returned, I was really shocked by the extent of her weight loss,” Sager admitted, mentioning that despite these changes, Keaton’s creativity and enthusiasm remained intact.
“She was a brilliant light to everyone around her,” Sager reflected. “She exuded positivity and was endlessly creative — constantly capturing moments through photography, she was fully immersed in life.”
The duo’s last collaboration was on Keaton’s holiday track “First Christmas,” which was released in late 2024. “She cherished the recording process,” Sager reminisced. “She poured her heart into the song and even became emotional during the session.”
“She was truly one of a kind,” Sager stated. “There will never be another like her.”
As previously reported by TMZ, the LAFD responded to an emergency call at Keaton’s residence around 8:08 AM on Saturday morning, transporting one individual — later confirmed to be Keaton — to a local hospital. Audio from dispatch indicated that responders described a “person down” at her location. She subsequently passed away at the age of 79.
