The season 3 debut of CBSâs Elsbeth tackled the unexpected departure of a key cast member â but could the beloved character make a comeback?
In the episode aired on Sunday, October 12, Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) resumed her role at work solo, without Kaya (Carra Patterson). This was significant as Kaya took on a new undercover role in Washington D.C., providing the creative team an opportunity to enrich the storyline of the successful police procedural.
âI wish I could say there was an elaborate design behind it, but much of it depends on the direction of our discussions in the writersâ room,â executive producer Jonathan Tolins revealed exclusively to Us Weekly at the season 3 screening, facilitated by Know Your Lemons and Tribeca at AMC Lincoln Square. âWhen surprises arise, it energizes us. Thatâs what we aim to pursue.â
Tolins hinted that Captain Wagnerâs (Wendell Pierce) storyline will be less prominent, noting, âWeâre also introducing new characters who will challenge Elsbethâs views on trust and honesty. She is forming new bonds in light of Kayaâs absence.â
When asked about Kaya’s potential return, Tolins affirmed that viewers will âdefinitely seeâ more of Pattersonâs character, alongside enticing teasers from previous episodes. Preston also addressed the evolution of the show with the new dynamics.
â[This season] it integrates so effectively with the detectives. Each case Elsbeth tackles will bring in different detectives. Weâve set that up already with new uniformed officers stepping in,â Preston, 58, elaborated. âSheâll connect with various individuals in distinct ways.â
Preston expressed her enthusiasm for the shakeup in the show three seasons in, stating, âIt keeps the series invigorating and ensures Elsbeth remains sharp. She’s interacting with new, younger colleagues and meeting fresh faces.â She added, âI don’t know if we’ll ever settle on just one â anything could occur. However, I really appreciate the new dynamics weâre experiencing.â
Originally premiering in 2024, Elsbeth revived its titular character, who initially appeared in The Good Wife and The Good Fight. The first two seasons showcased Elsbeth as a de facto detective supporting NYPD investigations, with Preston alongside Pierce and Patterson.
Fans were left shocked when season 2 concluded with Patterson departing as a main character.
âThis concept has been in the works since the start of season 2,â Preston disclosed exclusively to Us in May, âWe aimed to commemorate her character and promote her to detective. This elevation was thrilling for her storyline. Not as exhilarating for us, as we cherished working with Carra. I deeply value Carra and our time together.â
Preston indicated that Kaya’s journey isn’t over, saying, âShe remains part of the show â just in a different role. It’s beneficial, as it introduces conflict and gives Elsbeth new challenges, enriching my character.â
Elsbeth airs on CBS on Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET, with new episodes available for streaming the following day on Paramount+.
