Mark Esper, former Defense Secretary in the Trump administration, expressed serious concern over the former President’s comments about using the military against his political enemies. Esper stated that he takes Trump’s remarks about unleashing the military on his opponents “absolutely” seriously.

Esper pointed out that Trump has previously discussed seeking revenge on those he believes have wronged him. He also recalled instances where Trump wanted to deploy the National Guard and active duty military to handle protests in various cities.

When asked if he fears that Trump would use the military against U.S. citizens, Esper replied, “Yes, I do. Of course.” Esper’s concerns stem from his experiences during the 2020 election aftermath, when he was fired by Trump after disagreements on several issues.

Esper highlighted Trump’s past intentions to use the military in domestic matters, such as during the protests following George Floyd’s death. He emphasized the dangers of employing the military in such situations.

Looking ahead to a potential second Trump presidency, Esper warned of the erosion of established global norms and regulations that have contributed to prosperity over the years.
