Novak Djokovic, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, finds himself in a familiar position almost two decades after his last stint as the third-best player in the world. This ranking is not new to Djokovic, as he held the same position back in 2007-2009, behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

In recent times, Djokovic has faced tough competition from the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner, in particular, has been a thorn in Djokovic’s side, beating him twice this year and in four of their past five ATP meetings. This makes Sinner only the sixth player to achieve such a feat against Djokovic.

Despite winning Olympic gold in August by defeating Alcaraz, Djokovic has struggled against the top two players this year, winning just three sets in their encounters. Sinner and Alcaraz have dominated the Grand Slam events, leaving Djokovic without a major title in a calendar year for only the second time since 2010.

Djokovic, who aims to surpass Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles, expressed his motivation to continue competing at the highest level. However, his recent losses to Sinner and Alcaraz have raised concerns about his ability to maintain his dominance in the sport.

The Serbian star’s performance has declined this year, with his win percentage dropping to 80%, his lowest since 2010. Djokovic’s ranking has also suffered, as he currently sits at No. 4 in the ATP world rankings. With fewer tournament wins and points accrued, Djokovic faces the challenge of maintaining his seeding in major events.

As Djokovic navigates this phase of his career, he can draw inspiration from Roger Federer’s resilience during a similar period of challenges. Federer’s experience of facing younger rivals and adapting to changes in the tennis landscape could provide valuable insights for Djokovic as he seeks to prolong his career.

Despite the setbacks, Djokovic remains determined to continue competing and playing at the highest level. As he prepares for the upcoming season, Djokovic will need to find ways to overcome the rising competition from Sinner and Alcaraz to cement his legacy as one of the all-time greats in tennis.
