U.S. Expands Technology Collaboration in Asia with New Deals

During President Trump’s recent journey through Asia, the United States sealed Technology Prosperity Deals (TPD) with Japan and South Korea, aimed at enhancing and deepening partnerships in science and technology with these vital allies. Building upon the successful U.S.-United Kingdom TPD signed in September 2025, these agreements are designed to align regulatory standards, expedite research and development processes, and bolster national security within the unique tech landscapes of Japan and Korea.

“The Trump Administration is redefining American technological leadership by fostering bilateral collaborative partnerships with allies like Japan and Korea. Each Technology Prosperity Deal not only presents significant opportunities for accelerating scientific discovery but also positions the U.S. and its partners at the forefront of a new era of innovation,” stated Michael Kratsios, Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

The U.S.-Japan Technology Prosperity Deal, signed by Director Kratsios and Japan’s Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy, Onoda Kimi, is set to enhance cooperation in groundbreaking areas such as AI, quantum computing, biotechnology, space exploration, 6G telecommunications, and fusion energy.

  • The U.S.-Japan TPD will promote American interests through a coordinated approach to AI exports, thereby fortifying technology protections while enhancing collaboration between the U.S. Center for AI Standards and Innovation and the Japan AI Safety Institute, with a focus on metrology and standards innovation.
  • This agreement also aims to secure the innovation ecosystem by prioritizing research security, establishing resilient biotechnology and pharmaceutical supply chains, and safeguarding quantum technologies.
  • Moreover, the U.S.-Japan TPD advances strategic American interests in space exploration, 6G communications, and fusion technologies in partnership with a vital ally in the region.

    • Space: This collaboration acknowledges and expands Japan’s commitment to the Artemis program, which includes future missions to explore the lunar surface and develop commercial space capabilities.
    • 6G: The partnership facilitates the promotion of secure and trustworthy network infrastructures.
    • Fusion: This collaboration focuses on advancing American partnerships with Japan’s unique fusion energy facilities, including the JT-60SA tokamak, aiming to support the ongoing development of commercial fusion reactors.

Similarly, the U.S.-Republic of Korea Technology Prosperity Deal was signed by Director Kratsios and Korean Minister of Science, Information, and Communication Technology, Bae Kyung-hoon, reaffirming the commitment of both nations to collaborative science and technology efforts.

  • The U.S. will collaborate with Korean counterparts to alleviate operational challenges faced by technology companies and digital application platforms, with a particular focus on dismantling barriers to innovative data localization hosting systems.
  • Additionally, the U.S.-Korea TPD will enhance American interests through coordinated AI exports, strengthening both nations’ export controls and enforcement, and reorienting the partnership between the U.S. Center for AI Standards and Innovation and the Korea AI Safety Institute toward metrology and standards innovation.
  • This agreement also emphasizes joint efforts to secure the innovation ecosystem, prioritizing research security and safeguarding resilient biotechnology and pharmaceutical supply chains, as well as protecting quantum technologies.
  • Furthermore, the U.S.-Korea TPD seeks to further U.S. strategic interests in space exploration and 6G telecommunications, enlisting Korea as a crucial ally in the region.
  • Both nations also agreed to initiate discussions aimed at promoting AI education programs designed to empower children for success in the digital age and prepare future generations for the workforce of tomorrow. These initiatives will include participation in the Fostering the Future Together global initiative launched by First Lady Melania Trump.
