Senator Ben Ray Luján has introduced a significant bill aimed at funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, a move that is poised to create quite a stir among Republicans. As the government shutdown looms, the GOP seems determined to deprive 42 million Americans of essential food assistance, all in a bid to raise health insurance premiums for 23 million others. Yes, you read that right—it’s a gastronomic game of political poker.

Luján brought his proposal to the Senate floor, seeking unanimous consent—a procedural maneuver where legislation can pass without debate or individual votes as long as no senator objects. It’s a bit like agreeing to a group dinner only to have one person order a diet soda while everyone else opts for the steak.

The very notion that any Republican would object to providing nutritional assistance to children, the elderly, and disabled individuals already struggling in poverty is a precarious one. Yet, the GOP escalated tensions further by having the Majority Leader assert that the Democrats were at fault for refusing to barter food assistance for higher healthcare costs. Talk about a twisted form of negotiation!

After an emotional plea from Senator John Thune lamenting that Democrats weren’t giving Republicans what they wanted, Luján stepped in to deconstruct the Republican narrative with precision. In the Senate, where decorum reigns supreme and direct confrontations are frowned upon, Luján managed to convey his message with grace, albeit with a touch of rural wisdom.

Luján remarked:

“I have respect for the Majority Leader and his staff, whom I’ve collaborated with in the past. However, I find it troubling that any justification is being sought for allowing 40 million people to go hungry.”

“Mr. President, I sometimes get into trouble for using expressions from my upbringing on the farm, but I’ve learned the Senate’s rules of decorum, so I’ll refrain from using them here.”

“My father taught me valuable lessons about honesty and responsibility, even when I returned from Washington. He’d leave a shovel at the door and my rubber boots ready, reminding me we had chores to do.”

“Raising livestock means dealing with the realities of life, including the byproducts that can be used to enrich our land. While some might call it manure, I’ll refrain from using the more colorful terms I prefer outside these walls. It’s crucial to be truthful with the American people.”

“What the Majority Leader neglected to mention was that during previous negotiations under a Democratic majority, we avoided shutdowns. We reached agreements. My constituents often told me that Democrats had compromised too much.”

“When you hold power, the art of negotiation involves collaboration. As we used to say back home, if folks can’t figure things out, you might as well lock them in a barn until they come to a consensus.”
