Today marks the 290th anniversary of President John Adams’s birth—a pivotal figure among the Founding Fathers, whose intellect, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his country were vital in securing America’s independence and laying the groundwork for our Republic.

Emerging from colonial Massachusetts, John Adams was steeped in a profound sense of faith, a relentless work ethic, and a strong commitment to civic duty. He earned a reputation as a lawyer renowned for his keen intellect, fairness, and bravery. These very principles propelled him to defend the British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre, serve as a delegate in both Continental Congresses, and be one of the first advocates for independence from Britain. His influence extended further with the drafting of Massachusetts’s Constitution—a document of significant historical importance—and through his successful diplomatic missions in Europe that were crucial in supporting the American war effort, ultimately leading to the successful conclusion of the American Revolution.

As the second President of the United States, John Adams played a crucial role in enhancing the Navy, safeguarding American sovereignty, and defending national interests amidst international pressures. He oversaw the transition of the Federal Government to Washington, D.C., effectively transforming revolutionary ideals into a functional framework for self-governance. Through his steadfast leadership and resolute commitment, he ensured that the liberties fought for by the Revolution’s Patriots would endure for future generations.

Adams was a staunch advocate of the rule of law, emphasized the importance of education, and believed it was the responsibility of every citizen to uphold the cause of freedom. Despite facing intense opposition, he steadfastly prioritized the nation over politics.

As we prepare to commemorate 250 years of American independence, my Administration is dedicated to furthering the ideals for which President Adams championed. In a nod to our military history, we have rebranded the Department of Defense as the Department of War, reaffirming America’s unmatched strength on the global stage. We are also committed to restoring the fundamental principle of equal justice under the law by recalibrating the scales of power within our nation’s judiciary, while staunchly supporting America’s long-held traditions of prayer, faith, and trust in God. Furthermore, we continue to pursue a foreign policy grounded in the philosophy of peace through strength, prioritizing our citizens, values, and national interests.

On this day, we honor a man whose convictions contributed to the birth of the greatest nation in history. Let us carry forward President Adams’s legacy of strength, duty, and patriotism as we strive to usher in a new Golden Age for America.
