Old YouTube Videos Will Soon Look a Lot Better

Google has introduced a groundbreaking feature on YouTube that will enhance the quality of older video content on various devices including smartphones and TVs.

As YouTube marks its 20th anniversary this year, there is a vast library of video content that may not meet the standards of modern high-resolution displays.

To address this issue, Google has rolled out a new AI-powered feature that will upscale lower resolution videos on YouTube, starting with videos below 1080p, and potentially going as low as 240p, to enhance them to HD quality.

The ultimate goal is to upscale sub-1080p content to 4K resolutions in the near future, ensuring a superior viewing experience for users.

Content creators have the option to opt-out of the upscaling process, preserving the original files and resolution. Viewers will also have the choice to watch the original videos or opt for the new ‘super resolution’ option.

To further enhance the presentation of videos on YouTube, the platform is increasing the thumbnail file limit from 2MB to 50MB. This upgrade will allow creators to use high-quality 4K thumbnails to attract viewers.

YouTube is also experimenting with larger video uploads, which will result in improved video quality overall, making the viewing experience more enjoyable for users.
