SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for “The Witcher” Season 4, now streaming on Netflix.
In the latest season of "The Witcher," fans are introduced to a new witcher on the hunt in the Continent. Liam Hemsworth takes on the role of Geralt, following Henry Cavill’s departure after Season 3. The story picks up with Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer all separated and searching for each other.
Each character has assembled a new group of allies in their search. Geralt is accompanied by his bard friend Jaskier, vampire Regis, and others. Yennefer leads the sorceresses to find Ciri, while Ciri assumes a new identity as Falka and joins a group of outlaws known as the Rats.
Geralt and Yennefer are determined to stop Emperor Emhyr var Emreis from fulfilling an ancient prophecy involving Ciri. They soon discover that the marriage between Emhyr and Ciri is a sham, and that Emhyr is holding a fake Ciri hostage. However, they face other threats, including the evil wizard Vilgefortz who attacks Yennefer’s forces in the Battle of Montecalvo. With the help of other witchers, they defeat Vilgefortz, but not without losses.
On Ciri’s side, the deranged bounty hunter Leo Bonhart tracks her down and brutally beheads the Rats, taking Ciri as his prisoner. In the finale, Geralt is knighted after the Battle of the Bridge, but Emhyr sends a mysterious monster after him.
In a recent interview with Variety, showrunner Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich discusses the season’s shocking deaths, the characters’ journeys in the upcoming fifth season, and more.
The season explores Ciri’s growth as she forms a relationship with Mistle, a criminal from the Rats. The heartbreaking loss of her allies will push her to confront her darkest fears and emotions.
The death of Vesemir in a battle against Vilgefortz serves as a catalyst for Geralt’s evolution. It forces him to reconsider his priorities and embrace his role as a father figure to Ciri.
The season also sees Liam Hemsworth stepping into the role of Geralt, bringing a new emotional depth to the character. His performance surprised the cast and crew with his ease and comfort in portraying the complex character.
The show experiments with storytelling formats, such as Regis’ animated backstory and Jaskier’s musical interlude, adding a unique touch to the season.
Nimue’s introduction hints at a larger role in the story, suggesting that she will play a significant part in the upcoming season.
As for the future, fans can expect more monsters and challenges for Geralt in Season 5. The show aims to deliver the next season in a shorter time frame than the previous gap between seasons.
Overall, "The Witcher" Season 4 delivers a thrilling and emotional journey for the characters, setting the stage for an epic conclusion in Season 5.
