JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The inauguration ceremony of President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Monday marked a new chapter in Tanzanian politics. Despite her overwhelming victory at the polls on Oct. 29, the absence of public attendees was notable.

Hassan’s victory with 98% of the vote came amidst the banning of the country’s largest opposition party Chadema from contesting the elections. The party’s leader, Tundu Lissu, is currently facing treason charges.

Deogratias Munishi, spokesman for Chadema, criticized the elections, calling them illegitimate and a sham. He also highlighted the brutal crackdown by security forces on protesters.

The situation in Tanzania has been marred by violence, with reports of numerous casualties. Despite the government’s denial of excessive force, Munishi claimed that over 1,000 people have been killed.

Amidst the unrest, opposition leader Tundu Lissu faces serious charges and risks the death penalty. His lawyer, Robert Amsterdam, condemned the government’s actions and called for international intervention.

President Hassan, who succeeded the authoritarian John Magufuli in 2021, is facing criticism for her handling of the recent unrest. Reports suggest her son may have played a role in the crackdown.

The international community, including the African Union, has been called upon to address the situation in Tanzania and condemn the fraudulent activities surrounding the elections.

Despite the challenges, the opposition remains resolute in their stance against the government’s actions.

Tanzania’s political turmoil reflects a broader trend in Africa, with several countries experiencing disputed elections and civil unrest.
