In summary:

  • Tech Advisor highlights Google’s launch of a new detailed backup feature for Android users via Google Play Services version 26.24.
  • This update allows for individualized app backup management instead of the previous global settings, helping users reduce cloud storage expenses and avoid Google One subscriptions.
  • The feature is initially available on Google Pixel devices for Android 16 and 17 users, with a wider rollout anticipated soon.

Google is actively enhancing data backup capabilities on Android. Following significant progress in February, all Android users will now have access to a new feature that offers more control over what they choose to back up.

The update, as reported by 9to5Google, provides more precise backup management, allowing users to create and manage backups for individual apps. Previously, backups could only be enabled for all apps globally, requiring either complete backup or none at all.

Once the feature is activated, devices will back up data to cloud storage. Users will have limited storage space unless they opt for a Google One subscription, which guarantees at least 15GB of storage if the phone number is registered.

The ability to selectively back up individual apps is a significant advantage. By choosing to back up only the most important apps and data, users might avoid the need for additional storage purchases.

It’s crucial to note that if a cloud backup is enabled for a specific app and then later disabled, any previously backed-up data will be permanently deleted.

How to manage your backups

The new backup option can be accessed in your Android device’s settings under Google Services > Backup > Backup details.

Here, you’ll find a list of suggested apps available for backup, organized by storage usage in descending order. Additional apps can be viewed through the advanced view.

Users can also decide whether to back up data using Wi-Fi only or include mobile data, keeping in mind that using mobile data may result in high data usage when mobile.

Who will get this feature?

Google is gradually deploying the new backup feature to all users on Android 16 or Android 17. Initially, this update will be available on Google Pixel smartphones, with other manufacturers expected to follow in the coming weeks.

This update is part of Google Play Services version 26.24. Most users will receive this update automatically. To check which version is currently installed on your device, navigate to Settings > Apps > All apps > Google Play Services.
