Google Nest Learning Thermostat Support Ends: What You Need to Know

In a recent announcement, Google revealed that support for the first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats has officially ended as of 25 October. This news has left many smart home enthusiasts frustrated, as they now face the prospect of using their smart thermostats without access to key features.

While the end of support means that users will no longer be able to access smart features such as remote controls, notifications, and other cloud-based functions via the Nest or Home apps, there is a silver lining. Unlike mobile devices and laptops, a smart thermostat can still be used safely even after support has ended. This means that while your device may lose its smart capabilities, it also becomes immune to potential bugs or malware.

However, for those unwilling to settle for a “dumb” thermostat experience, there may be hope on the horizon. Reddit user ‘ckociemba’ has announced plans to restore all removed features in the coming days through a new website. This solution would provide users with an alternative way to access the functionality they have come to rely on, albeit outside of the official Nest or Google apps. There is even talk of a potential mobile app in the works, pending community interest.

In an effort to test and refine this workaround, ‘ckociemba’ is seeking assistance from Nest owners with Home Assistant setups. Interested parties can reach out via Discord to participate in the testing process. While there are no guarantees that this project will come to fruition, the prospect of reviving an expired Nest Thermostat to its former glory is certainly enticing.

As the Nest community eagerly awaits further developments, it’s clear that the end of support for these older devices doesn’t have to mean the end of their usefulness. With innovative solutions on the horizon, there is still hope for those looking to continue enjoying the convenience and efficiency of their Nest Learning Thermostats.
