India Women’s team head coach Amol Muzumdar made headlines after leading his team to a historic victory in the Women’s World Cup 2025. The Women in Blue emerged victorious against South Africa by 52 runs in the final held at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai, on Sunday, November 2.
In a moment reminiscent of Rohit Sharma’s iconic flag celebration in Barbados, Muzumdar recreated the gesture by planting the Indian flag on the ground in Navi Mumbai after the triumph. This gesture paid homage to Rohit Sharma, who had led India to victory at the 2024 T20 World Cup and celebrated by planting the flag in Barbados after defeating South Africa in the final.
The Indian Women’s team put up a strong performance in the final, batting first and posting a challenging total of 298/7 on the board. Shafali Verma top-scored with 87, supported by contributions from Smriti Mandhana (45), Deepti Sharma (58), and Richa Ghosh (34). The bowlers then did a commendable job, bowling out South Africa for 246 in 45.3 overs. Deepti Sharma was the star with the ball, claiming figures of 5/39 in 9.3 overs, while Shafali Verma also chipped in with a couple of wickets.
With this victory, Amol Muzumdar became the first Indian coach to win the Women’s ODI World Cup, while Harmanpreet Kaur achieved the milestone of being the first Indian captain to accomplish this feat in the Women’s game.
Amol Muzumdar, a stalwart in Indian domestic cricket, had a prolific career as a right-handed batsman. Despite not getting the opportunity to represent the country at the international level, Muzumdar made a mark in first-class cricket by amassing 11167 runs from 171 games at an impressive average of 48.13, including 30 centuries and 60 half-centuries. He also had a successful stint in List A cricket, scoring 3286 runs from 106 innings with three centuries.
After his playing career, Muzumdar transitioned into coaching and was appointed as the head coach of the Indian Women’s team in 2023. Prior to this role, he had served as the batting coach of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL.
The victory in the Women’s World Cup 2025 not only showcased the talent and determination of the Indian Women’s team but also solidified Amol Muzumdar’s legacy as a successful coach in Indian cricket. With his leadership, the team achieved a historic milestone and brought pride to the nation.
