Art has the incredible power to captivate us, transporting us to a world where everything else fades away. Recently, I had the privilege of experiencing this firsthand with a stunning miniature painting by the talented Brooklyn-based Pakistani artist, Hiba Schahbaz.

In her piece entitled “The Guard” (2015-2025), Schahbaz presents a mesmerizing scene where a nude angel emerges from rose-colored walls, surrounded by delicate blue dragons and ethereal clouds. Standing alongside her are a court of female guards, adorned in intricately detailed headpieces and shields, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the intricate beauty of the composition.

Schahbaz’s journey as an artist began in Karachi, where she would spend hours sketching tiny figures late into the night. It was during her time at the National College of Arts in Lahore that she was introduced to Indo-Persian miniature painting, a traditional art form known for its meticulous detail and rich storytelling. This discovery marked a turning point in Schahbaz’s artistic career, as she found herself drawn to the ritualistic nature of creating miniature artworks.

For over 15 years, Schahbaz has honed her practice, blending personal narratives with mythological themes in her poetic miniature paintings. Her body of work has since expanded to include larger compositions and installations, many of which are currently on display in her solo exhibition, “Hiba Schahbaz: The Garden,” at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. Curated by Jasmine Wahi, the exhibition features over 70 works that delve into themes of fantasy, heritage, and self-discovery.

As I reflect on the profound impact that Schahbaz’s art has had on me, I am reminded of the transformative power of creativity. Through her intricate brushwork and evocative storytelling, she invites us to explore new worlds and uncover hidden truths within ourselves. It is a testament to the enduring beauty and significance of art in our lives, a reminder that in the presence of great art, everything else pales in comparison.
