Malaika Temba is an artist whose work delves into the intricate balance between rest and labor, intimacy and vast systems that shape our world. With a background that spans various countries and cultures, including Saudi Arabia, Uganda, South Africa, Morocco, and the United States, Temba’s art is deeply influenced by the ways in which fabric marks culture and identity.

Using a combination of digital and analog processes, Temba creates layered textile pieces that explore themes of migration, labor, gender, global trade, and daily life. One of her primary tools is the Jacquard loom, a machine that allows for the creation of intricate patterns through automated methods. Temba’s work often features tender portraits of individuals and urban scenes, capturing the essence of daily life in the city.

In her recent installation, “She Weaves White Gold,” currently on display at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Temba utilizes sisal—a fiber deeply connected to labor and trade in Tanzania—as both the primary material and concept. Through her work, she aims to depict stories of work, migration, and endurance across geographies and systems of production and exchange.

After creating the main textile element on the Jacquard loom, Temba adds layers of hand-manipulated elements such as unraveled areas, paint, and silkscreening. This process imbues her work with a sense of constant flux, where pieces are simultaneously constructed and undone, capturing multiple moments within a single woven scene.

Temba’s art pays homage to the lives and labor of people in East Africa, particularly in a time marked by political tensions and conflicts. By representing ordinary people and their daily experiences, Temba’s work serves as a reminder of the value and dignity inherent in everyday life, often overlooked in the midst of larger narratives.
