With the ongoing rise in measles cases, the government is urging all New Zealanders to verify their immunisation status and ensure that their families are adequately protected.

Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora (HNZ) is addressing this issue through the nationwide Measles Immunisation Week campaign.

In a recent statement, Health Minister Simeon Brown emphasized the urgency of the situation. “Measles is highly contagious, with a single case capable of infecting 12 to 18 unvaccinated individuals,” he stated.

He further highlighted the high likelihood of contracting measles if exposed without immunisation, urging individuals to take advantage of Measles Immunisation Week to receive the MMR vaccine.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine and promote timely immunisation for individuals of all ages to curb the spread of measles.

“Additional clinics are operational throughout the week. Parents of children aged 12 months and older who have not yet received the MMR vaccine are encouraged to act promptly,” Brown advised.

He also urged individuals born between 1969 and 2004 to confirm their immunisation status, emphasizing the need for a 95% immunisation rate to prevent outbreaks.

Free MMR immunisations are available to all individuals aged 12 months and above in New Zealand.

Associate Education Minister David Seymour stressed the importance of maintaining regular school attendance, following updated health advice.

“Unless there is a confirmed measles case at a school, all students should continue attending, regardless of their vaccination status,” Seymour stated.

In instances where a measles case is confirmed, HNZ’s National Public Health Service will cross-reference school rolls with the Aotearoa Immunisation Register to identify students requiring isolation as close contacts if not fully vaccinated.

While acknowledging the seriousness of measles, Seymour emphasized a balanced and rational approach to school attendance, avoiding unnecessary closures or exclusions in the absence of direct risk.

Measles cases have been reported in various regions, including Northland, Auckland, Taranaki, Wellington, and Nelson, with signs of community transmission confirmed by HNZ.
