The Philadelphia Art Museum (PhAM) made headlines recently after the sudden dismissal of Director and CEO Sasha Suda. The decision came after an emergency board meeting, with Suda being terminated via email for “cause” without further explanation. This move occurred just three years into her five-year contract and less than a month after the museum’s controversial rebrand.

Suda, a Canadian art historian who previously led the National Gallery of Canada, faced criticism during her tenure at PhAM. She inherited a challenging situation marked by her predecessor’s resignation due to mishandling of abuse reports and sexual harassment allegations. Additionally, the museum struggled with budget cuts, staff reductions, and a decrease in visitors post-pandemic.

One of the key challenges Suda faced was the unionization of museum staff in 2020. Negotiations over pay increases led to a historic 19-day strike shortly after Suda took office. Despite a ratified contract in October 2022, tensions resurfaced when the museum allegedly failed to honor longevity pay increases based on years of service, prompting further protests.

The museum made headlines again in October with its rebrand from the Philadelphia Museum of Art to the Philadelphia Art Museum. The move, spearheaded by Suda and a design studio, sparked mixed reactions among locals and online audiences. While some saw it as a necessary update, others criticized it as unnecessary and costly.

Suda defended the rebrand, stating that it simply formalized what many already referred to the museum as colloquially. Despite some trustees expressing surprise at the rollout date, PhAM remains committed to the rebrand, affirming that there are no plans to revert or alter it.

As the board considers candidates for an interim director and CEO, Deputy Director Louis Marchesano will oversee the museum’s daily operations. The union representing museum staff has yet to comment on Suda’s termination. The circumstances surrounding her dismissal and the future direction of PhAM remain uncertain as the institution navigates this period of transition.
