Will NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch Stay on in Zohran Mamdani’s Administration?

There is anticipation in the air as NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch awaits an official offer from Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani regarding her position in his administration. Although no formal offer has been extended yet, sources reveal that there is a push from insiders for Tisch to continue her role in the socialist mayor’s team.

Before the election on Tuesday, Mamdani had indicated to Tisch that they would discuss her future in his administration post-November 4. Following his historic win, Mamdani reiterated his commitment to keeping Tisch on board, praising her for her efforts in combatting incompetence and corruption within the police department under Mayor Eric Adams.

Despite facing criticism during his mayoral campaign for past anti-cop rhetoric, Mamdani has reaffirmed his intention to retain Tisch, emphasizing the need for a government comprised of the best and brightest individuals. Prominent figures such as Governor Kathy Hochul, Kathy Wylde, and House Majority Speaker Hakeem Jeffries have advocated for Tisch’s continuation in the administration to allay concerns about a potential rise in crime rates under Mamdani’s leadership.

Conversely, Tisch has been advised by her family and key figures in law enforcement to consider Mamdani’s offer, recognizing the importance of collaboration between the administration and the NYPD for the city’s well-being. Vincent Vallelong, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association union, emphasized the significance of Tisch’s presence in ensuring the success of Mamdani’s tenure.

If Tisch decides not to accept the offer, Mamdani has alternative candidates in mind for the position, including Isa Abbassi and Rodney Harrison, both seasoned law enforcement officials. However, some within the police force remain skeptical of Mamdani’s commitment to supporting the NYPD, citing his limited focus on crime in his victory speech.

Mamdani’s transition team has been unveiled to aid in the staffing of his incoming administration, with plans to engage in discussions with Tisch regarding her potential role. While Mamdani has reiterated his desire to retain Tisch, the final decision remains pending as Tisch has yet to respond to the offer.

As the city awaits the outcome of these deliberations, the future of law enforcement leadership in New York City hangs in the balance.
