Joe Schmidt’s coaching position is likely to be questioned following the Wallabies’ disappointing 26-19 loss to Italy in Udine.

The Wallabies displayed familiar issues with discipline, allowing Italy to come from behind and secure the victory. This defeat marks the sixth loss in the last eight Tests under Schmidt’s leadership, raising concerns ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup draw.

Ranked seventh in the world, the Wallabies will need to defeat Ireland and France in their upcoming fixtures to secure a top-six seeding for the World Cup in Australia. However, their recent performances suggest this may be a challenging task.

Following a lackluster showing against England, the Wallabies’ defeat to Italy raises further doubts about their ability to compete at the highest level. Schmidt’s win rate has dropped to 42%, one of the lowest in Wallabies coaching history.

Despite the disappointing result, Schmidt remains determined to turn things around. “We just look a bit flat. I said progress isn’t linear, but that was a flat performance. That’s a dip we can’t afford to have,” he commented.

Wallabies captain Harry Wilson expressed his disappointment, stating, “We’re hurting. We wanted to fix up from last week. We said ‘we’re going to fix it up’ and we didn’t.”

The match saw a series of penalties and missed opportunities for the Wallabies, ultimately leading to Italy’s victory. The team will need to regroup and focus on their upcoming games to salvage their season.

Despite the challenges ahead, Schmidt and his players are determined to bounce back and show their true potential on the field. As they prepare for their next matches, they will need to address their weaknesses and work together to achieve success.
