A tragic incident occurred in Gresham on Friday night when a man was found shot to death inside a vehicle. Shockingly, witnesses who heard the gunshots did not immediately call the police. It was only after an hour had passed that they noticed the man slumped over in his car and alerted authorities.

The shooting took place in the 8800 block of South Lowe Avenue, a neighborhood that was once covered by the city’s ShotSpotter gunfire detection system. This system, if still active, could have potentially alerted first responders to the incident, even in the absence of initial emergency calls.

Chicago police received a call about a person shot at around 10:09 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a 37-year-old man in the driver’s seat of a white Nissan Maxima with two gunshot wounds to the chest. Despite being rushed to Christ Hospital, the man was pronounced dead.

Witnesses reported hearing two gunshots and seeing several individuals fleeing from the vehicle around 9 p.m. However, no one contacted 911 at the time of the shooting. Surveillance footage reviewed by officers revealed that two men, described as Black males wearing dark clothing, ran from the scene towards 89th Street after firing the shots.

Ald. Ronnie Mosley, representing the 21st Ward where the incident occurred, had advocated for the retention of the ShotSpotter system. However, Mayor Brandon Johnson made the decision to discontinue its use, resulting in the system going offline citywide in September 2024.

The termination of ShotSpotter has raised concerns about the timely reporting of gun-related incidents in violence-impacted neighborhoods. Cases like these highlight the importance of technology in assisting law enforcement and emergency services in responding promptly to such incidents.

As of now, Chicago no longer utilizes ShotSpotter, a technology that was instrumental in identifying gunfire locations in high-crime areas. Despite calls from various stakeholders to reconsider the decision, Mayor Johnson remained firm in his stance to dismantle the system.

This unfortunate event underscores the need for effective communication and swift action in emergency situations to prevent further loss of life. The community must come together to address the challenges posed by gun violence and work towards creating safer neighborhoods for all residents.
