Denver Public Schools Board of Education Censures Director John Youngquist

The Denver Public Schools Board of Education took a rare step on Thursday by formally reprimanding director John Youngquist for his behavior toward district staff. An outside investigation revealed that Youngquist’s conduct was “belittling, dismissive, and condescending.”

Superintendent Alex Marrero requested the censure, which was approved in a 5 to 1 vote by the school board. This decision came after Youngquist had been publicly criticized twice this year for his treatment of DPS employees.

Board Vice President Marlene De La Rosa emphasized the importance of upholding values of equity, professionalism, accountability, and respect within the district. Youngquist, however, remained adamant in his denial of the investigation’s findings, accusing DPS leaders of retaliation.

This marks the second time in four years that a DPS school board has censured a member. The board’s authority is limited to censure and does not extend to removal of a member.

During public comments, former director Auon’tai Anderson, who had been censured in 2021, spoke in support of the censure against Youngquist. Others defended Youngquist, citing his advocacy for diverse communities over the years.

The investigation into Youngquist’s behavior revealed biases in his interactions with employees of color, though it did not definitively determine if these biases were intentional. The board did not impose restrictions on Youngquist’s interactions with district staff.

Attorneys from Garnett Powell Maximon Barlow and Farbes conducted the investigation. Board member Xóchitl Gaytán called for policy governance and anti-bias training for Youngquist.
