Unpacking the Journey of Building a Lasting Company with Forethought AI Co-Founder Deon Nicholas

In the inaugural episode of the Build Mode podcast, Isabelle Johannessen engages in a candid conversation with Deon Nicholas, the co-founder of Forethought AI, to delve into the essential elements of creating a sustainable company that prioritizes its customers right from the start.

Build Mode, JS’s latest podcast venture, offers listeners a behind-the-scenes look at the nitty-gritty process of building startups – the raw, practical, and unfiltered version. Season 1, titled “Product, Meet Market,” goes beyond the concept of product-market fit to explore the intricacies of bringing a product to the hands of consumers, from identifying the target audience and gaining their trust to translating initial traction into long-term success.

Right from the outset, Nicholas and his team were committed to solving genuine problems rather than getting caught up in the hype or chasing inflated valuations. He firmly believes that confidence should stem from customers, not venture capitalists, and that by delivering tangible value to real users, the hype and valuations would naturally follow.

Nicholas introduces his “7-Failure Rule,” advocating for a culture of iteration over perfection and acknowledging that a few setbacks are inevitable before finding the winning formula.

The Forethought team maintained a lean approach, zeroed in on their ideal customer profile, and concentrated on addressing actual pain points rather than flashy features. Nicholas emphasizes that early users may not always articulate what isn’t working, necessitating founders to read between the lines.

This customer-centric mindset propelled Forethought to its breakthrough moment at JS Disrupt 2018, where the company emerged victorious in the Startup Battlefield competition. Leading up to the event, Nicholas described the experience as a “friendly pressure cooker,” hustling to secure as many paying customer endorsements as possible before taking the stage. This intense focus paid off, generating investor interest and a $9 million Series A funding round, solidifying Forethought’s presence in the early stages of the AI boom.

Despite the rapid investor attention, Nicholas attributes the company’s lasting success to a steadfast focus rather than succumbing to frenzy. According to him, startup triumph is not about hype or high-energy theatrics – it’s about creating a product that customers genuinely love and are willing to stay loyal to.

For aspiring founders, the key takeaway is clear: Build your company with your customers in mind from day one, validate each step with feedback, and resist the allure of valuations or buzz. Achieving product-market fit isn’t about attaining perfection; it’s about consistently delivering value to those who matter most – your customers.

Episodes of Build Mode are released every Thursday. Subscribe now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Also, don’t forget to check out the video version on JS’s YouTube.
