Uber Introduces In-App Video Recording for Drivers in India

Uber has recently launched a pilot program for in-app video recording for its drivers in India, aimed at deterring misconduct and providing evidence in case of disputes. The tool comes in response to reports from drivers in the Delhi-NCR region who have faced misconduct and false complaints from riders.

According to Uber, the in-app video recording feature is designed to protect drivers in situations where they may be threatened with false complaints or pressured to deviate from the suggested route. The tool is currently being tested in 10 cities across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and others.

Drivers will receive a notification when video recording is active, ensuring transparency and consent from both parties. The recordings are double-encrypted, stored on the device, and automatically deleted after a week if not shared as part of a safety report.

The video recording feature builds on Uber’s existing audio recording tool, which was introduced in India in 2023. While video recording has been tested in the U.S., Canada, and Brazil, its expansion in India raises questions about privacy and surveillance.

Uber will need to carefully evaluate the pilot program’s performance in the coming months to determine whether to roll out the video recording tool more widely. The balance between resolving disputes and respecting privacy will be crucial in shaping the future of this feature in India and potentially other regions.
