Chuwi: The Rising Band that Stole the Show at the Latin Grammys

Last night at the Latin Grammys, all eyes were on Bad Bunny as he took home five awards, including album of the year for his sixth album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos. However, it was his collaboration with Chuwi, the Puerto Rican band featured on the track “Weltita,” that truly stole the show.

Comprised of siblings Lorén Aldarondo, Wester Aldarondo, and Wilfredo “Willy” Aldarondo, along with Adrián López, Chuwi blends tropical jazz, salsa, and indie rock to create music that speaks to classic themes of love, loss, and patria. Despite starting out playing local shows and working day jobs in 2024, the band has seen a meteoric rise in popularity this year, performing at Bad Bunny’s La Residencia, recording a Tiny Desk session for NPR, and even taking the stage in Las Vegas for a memorable performance that combined “Weltita” with their own track “Tikiri.”

Before their Latin Grammys performance, the band expressed their excitement at the opportunity to showcase their music on such a prestigious stage. “It’s a song we carry close to our hearts—one of our first songs, and also one of our most well-known. So we know people connect with it,” they shared. Dressed to impress on the red carpet, the members of Chuwi donned glamorous attire, with Lorén in a stunning dress from Morphew and the rest of the band in tuxedos from Leonardo’s—a Puerto Rican institution known for its iconic suits.

Despite the nerves that come with performing at such a high-profile event, the band relied on familiar rituals to calm their jitters, from working out to creative distractions. Onstage, Chuwi showcased their signature Caribbean cool style, with Lorén sporting bikini tops and experimental knitwear, while the rest of the band opted for fun and casual separates from Puerto Rican designers.

As they prepared to take the stage at the Latin Grammys, Chuwi graciously took Vogue along for a glimpse into their day. From their humble beginnings to their newfound success, this talented band is poised to make a lasting impact on the music scene.
