He expressed his admiration for the fantastic apprehensions they have made, despite facing increasing hostility from city and state leadership.
Bovino criticized the rhetoric used by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, stating that calling them barbarians and Nazis only incites violence against Border Patrol agents. He mentioned that the hostile attitude from the leadership has led to people trying to kill officers out in the open.
The situation escalated when the Latin Kings street gang issued a âshoot on sightâ order targeting immigration officials, leading to an increase in violence on the streets. There have been incidents of activists hurling paint cans and bricks at CBP vehicles, as well as a man opening fire on Border Patrol officers during operations.
Despite the challenges they face, Bovino praised his officers for their dedication, citing a successful operation where over 30 individuals with alleged ties to a US-designated terrorist organization were apprehended. He emphasized that morale remains high among his officers, even in the face of increasing violence and resistance.
The situation in Chicago is described as “off the charts” compared to other cities like Los Angeles, where officials did not go over the edge as much. Bovino highlighted the difficulties they face in Chicago due to the hostile environment created by the city and state leadership, but commended his officers for their perseverance and dedication to their mission. Border Patrol Continues to Crack Down on Criminal Aliens in Chicagoland
Last week, Border Patrol agents in Chicagoland made another significant arrest, this time apprehending an illegal alien organized crime boss from Poland who had been living freely in Chicago for years. This criminal, wanted by international authorities, was finally taken into custody, adding to the growing number of criminal aliens being detained in the greater metropolitan area.
According to Border Patrol spokesperson Bovino, about 50 to 100 criminal aliens are being apprehended each day in Chicagoland since the start of Operation Midway Blitz in September. Nearly 4,000 criminals from over 30 countries have been detained as part of this mission. Despite the success of the operation, a judge recently ruled that 615 individuals arrested as part of the operation must be released on bail. The judge cited lack of final orders of removal from the country as the reason for their release, highlighting the challenges faced by federal authorities in enforcing immigration laws.
DHS reports that crime rates have significantly dropped since the launch of Operation Midway Blitz, with shootings at a four-year low and carjackings down by 48%. This reduction in crime has brought relief to residents who have been living in fear of gang violence and disorder for too long.
Border Patrol agents have been met with warm welcomes from the community, with Bovino noting that 95% of the people welcome their presence in the area. Despite facing criticism from a small minority who label them as “Nazis” and “barbarians,” Bovino emphasizes the importance of their mission in ensuring public safety.
As a veteran Border Patrol agent who joined the force in 1996, Bovino was inspired by Hollywood portrayals of the agency, including the film “The Border” starring Jack Nicholson. While the movie may not have painted Border Patrol in a positive light, it sparked Bovino’s interest in the organization and led him to enlist.
