The shocking incident that unfolded on Madison Avenue between East 95th and 96th streets was captured on chilling surveillance footage. The footage showed 20-year-old Elijah Brown, armed with a gun, walking casually down the street after threatening to shoot up Mount Sinai Hospital. As NYPD officers approached him, Brown suddenly turned and fired at them, prompting the officers to return fire. Brown collapsed on the sidewalk, where officers rushed to attend to him before he was transported to the hospital in an NYPD vehicle and later pronounced dead.

The chaos began when Brown brandished a firearm in an elevator of a residential building on Madison Avenue between East 106th and East 107th streets, pointing it directly at another person in the elevator. He then fled to a nearby deli, where he held a worker at gunpoint and declared his intention to shoot up the hospital. Brown stole the worker’s phone, fled south on Madison Avenue, and entered Mount Sinai Medical Center before leaving and placing his firearm near a tree outside.

Inside the hospital, Brown encountered an NYPD cop working on a paid security detail and began acting disorderly. A scuffle ensued, and Brown grabbed the officer from behind before retrieving his firearm. The off-duty officer called for backup, and the deadly shootout occurred soon after multiple people had exited an MTA bus nearby.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera emphasized the danger of the situation, noting that civilians were in close proximity during the shootout. He highlighted the bravery of NYPD officers who face dangerous situations daily but emphasized the heightened risk when individuals like Brown openly threaten and fire at law enforcement.

Despite the harrowing events, Brown had no prior arrests, according to police. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous nature of policing in a city like New York.
