WASHINGTON — President Trump has dismissed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s ambition to detain Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting instead that Iranian officials are the ones who should face arrest.
Mamdani, at 34, has previously campaigned on the platform of arresting Netanyahu should he visit New York City, particularly for events like the United Nations General Assembly, and has recently reiterated his interest in pursuing this action.
“Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America,” Trump declared on Truth Social, without mentioning Mamdani by name.
“He [Netanyahu] is fighting against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which recently killed 52,000 innocent protestors, and has spent the last 47 years killing American Soldiers, and others,” the president continued.
“The only ones that should be arrested are the people that led Iran into this unprecedented SPIRAL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, something that should have been dealt with years ago.”
Mamdani has argued that Netanyahu should be arrested due to an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant issued in 2024 over the war in Gaza.
The United States does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction.
As mayor, Mamdani stated he would adhere to US laws.
