French Spinoff of Amazon Prime’s “LOL: Last One Laughing” to Feature Hidden Cameras

“LOL: Last One Laughing,” the popular Amazon Prime comedy format that has been adapted in over 20 territories, is gearing up for an exciting French spinoff that will incorporate hidden cameras into the mix.

Unlike the original format where famous comedians compete to make each other laugh in a house setting, “LOL In Real Life” will take six celebrity contestants out into random public places in France to interact with unsuspecting individuals who are unaware of the game. Their interactions will be captured by hidden cameras for the audience’s amusement.

Commissioned by Thomas Dubois, head of France at Amazon MGM Studios, the spinoff will introduce new rules that task the six celebrities with making as many people as possible laugh, including fellow contestants and random passersby. Each laugh garnered will earn the contestant one point, with the two highest scorers advancing to the final round at the end of the 6-hour game.

Well-known actor and filmmaker Philippe Lacheau (“Alibi”), who has previously hosted four seasons of the French adaptation “LOL: Tu ris, Tu perds,” will serve as the host for “LOL In Real Life.” The production will be handled by Endemol France.

“Laughing Out Loud” originated from the Japanese format “Hitoshi Matsumoto Presents Documental,” produced by Yoshimoto Kogyo. In addition to France, Amazon has successfully launched localized versions in approximately 20 territories worldwide, including Mexico with host Eugenio Derbez and Australia with host Rebel Wilson.

“LOL In Real Life” is scheduled for exclusive release on Prime Video in 240 territories globally in 2025.

Season 5 of “LOL: Qui rit, sort” is also slated for release next year, featuring a star-studded French cast that includes Artus, MMA star Cédric Doumbe, and actors Camille Chamoux, Vincent Dedienne, Fatou Kaba, Alexandre Kominek, Jérôme Niel, Muriel Robin, Marina Rollman, and Fred Testot. The French team at Amazon Studios recently expanded the “Laughing Out Loud” franchise with a Halloween special, “LOL: Qui Crie, Sort!,” which premiered last fall.

“Laughing Out Loud” will be a focal point of a panel session at the start of the TV market Mipcom in Cannes today (Oct. 21) with key figures including James Farrell, Akihiko Okamoto, Thomas Dubois, and Nicole Morganti discussing the international success of the format.
