Why Google’s Latest Android Streaming Feature Needs Big Improvements

As an Entertainment Editor, I have the privilege of spending a significant amount of time consuming content across various streaming services. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. Over the years, I’ve developed some handy tricks to help me navigate the ever-changing landscape of streaming platforms and find the right service for specific shows and films.

Recently, Google Play Store rolled out a new feature that promised to revolutionize the way users discover where to watch their favorite content. On paper, the ‘Where to watch’ feature seemed like a game-changer for Android users, offering a convenient way to find and access movies and TV shows. However, in practice, the feature falls short of expectations and leaves much to be desired.

When searching for a specific show or film on the Google Play Store, the ‘Where to watch’ feature now displays a list of streaming platforms where the content is available, along with links to the respective apps. While this may seem like a convenient feature at first glance, it lacks several key elements that rival sites like JustWatch offer as standard.

One major drawback of Google’s feature is its failure to differentiate between free streaming options and paid rentals or purchases. For example, a search for Avengers: Infinity War may list platforms like YouTube and Amazon Prime Video as streaming options, when in reality, they only offer the movie for rent or purchase. This lack of clarity can be misleading for users looking for free streaming options.

Moreover, the feature does not provide pricing information for subscription services or rental/purchase options before users click through to the platform. This can lead to frustration and confusion for users who are trying to determine the most cost-effective way to access their desired content.

Additionally, the links provided by the feature often lead to generic pages or trailers, rather than directly to the listing pages for the specific content. This can be time-consuming and frustrating for users who just want to start watching their favorite movie or TV show.

While the ‘Where to watch’ feature has the potential to be a useful tool for Android users, it currently falls short of expectations due to its lack of essential features and inconsistencies in linking. Hopefully, Google will address these issues and fine-tune the feature in the coming months to provide a more user-friendly experience. In the meantime, users may find better alternatives for discovering where to watch their favorite content.
