Profluent, a biotech startup founded by Ali Madani, has recently secured $106 million in funding to further develop its AI models for biology in drug development and agriculture. Madani, a machine learning scientist who previously worked at Salesforce, began exploring the intersection of AI and biology back in 2020, before the launch of ChatGPT. Inspired by Salesforce’s ProGen project, which aimed to design novel proteins using generative AI, Madani saw the potential for AI to revolutionize the field of biology.

Teaming up with Alexander Meeske, head of a research lab at the University of Washington, Madani founded Profluent in Emeryville, California. Their AI models allow scientists to input desired properties for a protein in human language, such as stability or ease of manufacturing, and receive a DNA recipe to create that protein. This innovative approach has the potential to unlock groundbreaking new drugs and solutions in therapeutics, diagnostics, and agriculture.

With the recent $106 million funding round led by Jeff Bezos’s Bezos Expeditions and Altimeter Capital, Profluent’s total investment now stands at $150 million, with a valuation approaching $1 billion. The startup’s commercial partners include biotech giant Revvity, agricultural company Corteva Agrisciences, and Ensoma, a venture-backed firm working on genetic disease and cancer treatments.

Profluent faces competition from other companies like Isomorphic Labs and Xaira Therapeutics, also leveraging AI for protein design in drug discovery. However, Profluent’s focus on custom-designing new proteins for individual patient needs sets it apart in the industry. The startup has built a database called Protein Atlas, containing 115 billion unique proteins, the largest such resource globally. This extensive data, combined with advanced computational power, enables Profluent to build more sophisticated AI models and advance the field of AI-enabled biology.

Madani believes that the scalability of AI models in biology, similar to the scaling laws seen in other industries, will drive further innovation in drug discovery and protein design. Profluent’s recent introduction of the Profluent E-1 foundation model, providing evolutionary context, demonstrates the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI in biology.

Investors like Jamin Ball of Altimeter Capital see immense potential in AI-enabled biology and drug discovery, envisioning a future where scientists can move from serendipitous discoveries to purposeful design. Madani compares the current state of AI in biology to the early days of the Internet, emphasizing the transformative impact that programmable biology could have on healthcare and agriculture.

As Profluent continues to pioneer AI-driven advancements in biology, the company is poised to lead the next frontier in drug discovery and protein design. With the support of notable investors and strategic partnerships, Profluent is well-positioned to shape the future of biotechnology and revolutionize the way we approach healthcare and sustainable agriculture. With the rise of technology and social media, our lives have become more interconnected than ever before. We can now easily communicate with people halfway across the world, share our thoughts and opinions with a large audience, and stay informed about current events in real-time. However, this increased connectivity has also led to a rise in online harassment and cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying is defined as the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. This can take many forms, including sending hurtful messages, spreading rumors, or sharing embarrassing photos or videos. The anonymity provided by the internet can embolden people to say things they would never say in person, leading to a proliferation of online harassment.

One of the most common forms of cyberbullying is through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. These platforms allow users to easily share content with a wide audience, making it easy for bullies to target their victims and spread hurtful messages. In some cases, cyberbullying can escalate to the point of causing serious harm to the victim’s mental and emotional well-being.

In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of cyberbullying that have garnered national attention. One such case is the tragic story of Megan Meier, a teenager who took her own life after being cyberbullied on social media. Another example is the case of Amanda Todd, a Canadian teenager who also took her own life after being harassed and blackmailed online.

These cases serve as a stark reminder of the very real consequences of cyberbullying. It is not just harmless teasing or joking around – it can have serious and lasting effects on the mental health of the victim. Studies have shown that victims of cyberbullying are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts.

So what can be done to combat cyberbullying? One solution is for social media platforms to take a more proactive stance in addressing online harassment. This can include implementing stricter guidelines for acceptable behavior, providing tools for users to report abusive content, and taking swift action against offenders.

Another important step is for parents and educators to educate children about the dangers of cyberbullying and how to protect themselves online. This can include teaching them about the importance of privacy settings, how to block and report abusive users, and encouraging open communication about their online experiences.

Ultimately, it is up to all of us to create a safer and more respectful online environment. By speaking out against cyberbullying, supporting victims, and holding perpetrators accountable, we can work towards a world where everyone can feel safe and respected online. Let’s stand together against cyberbullying and make the internet a place where kindness and empathy prevail.
