A disturbing case out of South Carolina has left many questioning the justice system after a former “Teacher of the Year” received only probation for harassing an 11-year-old student with over 60 love letters. Dylan Robert Dukes, 27, admitted to bombarding the young girl with notes, gifts, and unwanted hugs while she was in his class at Starr Elementary School last year.

The inappropriate behavior escalated to the point where Dukes gave the girl a personalized box with a letter for each day of the week for the entire summer break. The girl’s family eventually had to remove her from the school due to Dukes’ obsession, but he didn’t stop there. He even went as far as joining her local church in an attempt to maintain contact with her.

When authorities searched Dukes’ classroom, they discovered numerous photos of the girl hidden in his desk. While the photos were not of a sexual nature, they were enough to raise concerns about the extent of Dukes’ fixation on the young student.

The girl’s mother spoke out about the impact Dukes’ behavior had on her child, stating that she had endured moments of discomfort in places where she should have felt safe and free to enjoy her childhood. The mother noted that Dukes’ attendance at their church only fueled his obsession and increased his access to her daughter.

Thankfully, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office intervened before the situation escalated further. Dukes was arrested on stalking charges but ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree harassment. Despite the seriousness of his actions, he was sentenced to five years of probation, with his jail time suspended.

As part of his plea deal, Dukes must undergo mental health counseling, surrender his teaching certificate, and adhere to a permanent restraining order preventing any contact with the young girl. It’s a concerning outcome for many, especially considering that Dukes was named the Teacher of the Year at Starr Elementary School in 2023.

The decision to only give probation to a teacher who engaged in such inappropriate behavior has sparked outrage and raised questions about the protection of students in schools. Dukes’ current status at the school remains unclear, leaving many wondering about the measures in place to prevent such incidents from happening again.
